Hey Woofy Pack,

A surprisingly simple happiness lesson from the four-legged experts

I have a question.

When was the last time you saw a dog ruin a perfectly good afternoon because they were worried about next Thursday?

Exactly.

Dogs have somehow mastered something humans keep turning into a very complicated project:

Being happy where they are.

Give a dog a sunny patch, somebody they love, five interesting smells and the possibility of a snack, and they are doing pretty well.

Meanwhile, we can have coffee, Wi-Fi, air conditioning and absolutely nothing wrong at the moment...

…and still be mentally arguing with something that happened three years ago.

So this week, I think we should borrow a few notes from the dogs.

🐾 Your 5-Minute Dog-Approved Happiness Reset

No journal required.

No 47-step morning routine.

No need to “reinvent yourself.”

Just try this:

1. Go outside for five minutes.
Bonus points if you investigate the breeze like it contains important neighborhood information.

2. Find one thing that is good right now.
Not tomorrow. Not when everything is finished.

Right now.

3. Move a little.
Walk. Stretch. Shake off the day. Dogs have been doing the full-body reset for years.

4. Contact somebody you actually like.
Dogs never pretend they are too cool to be excited about their people.

5. Give yourself a tiny reward.
Coffee counts. Sitting outside counts. A piece of chocolate counts.

Dogs would obviously vote for cheese.

We went a little deeper into this idea this week with:

10 Life Lessons We Can Learn From Dogs About Being Happy

Dogs are surprisingly good teachers when it comes to enjoying small things, letting go of yesterday, resting without guilt, loving your people and staying hopeful about what comes next.

And no, the advice is not simply:

Eat snacks. Take naps. Chase squirrels.

Although that is a suspiciously solid life plan.

The Happiness Sniff Test 🐕 🐾

Here is this week's completely unofficial Woofy assessment.

Ask yourself:

Have I done at least ONE thing lately simply because it makes me happy?

Not because it is productive.

Not because it needs to be crossed off a list.

Not because somebody expects you to do it.

Just because you like it.

If the answer is no, your assignment this week is ridiculously simple:

Do one thing purely because you enjoy it.

Read the book.

Sit outside.

Buy the ridiculous coffee.

Take the scenic route.

Watch the movie you've already seen twelve times.

Dogs do not apologize for loving the same tennis ball for six years.

You don't have to justify your little joys either.

This Week in Dog Logic

Human:

"I really shouldn't get too excited. I don't want to get my hopes up."

Dog:

THE CAR DOOR OPENED. THIS COULD BE THE GREATEST DAY OF MY LIFE.

Perhaps the dog has a point.

Your Tiny Tail-Wag Challenge

Sometime this week, catch yourself having a genuinely good moment.

And instead of immediately thinking about what you need to do next...

stay there for another minute.

Enjoy the coffee.

Listen to the song.

Sit in the sunshine.

Laugh.

Pet the dog.

Let a good moment actually be a good moment before rushing off to the next thing.

Your dog would.

Woofy Reminder

You do not have to wait until everything is perfect to enjoy your life.

Dogs certainly don't.

They've been known to have the time of their lives with an empty cardboard box.

Your Turn

What is one ridiculously simple thing that always makes you happy?

A walk?

Coffee?

Your dog's weird little morning routine?

Canceling plans?

Finding money in a coat pocket?

Hit reply and tell me.

Bonus points for answers involving dogs, snacks or naps.

Take the walk. Enjoy the sunny spot. Celebrate something small.

And remember:

Happiness does not always need a reason. Sometimes it just needs your attention.
